Wee Adventure became a registered Scottish Charitable Incorporated Organisation (SCIO) in August 2016. Our purpose is to advance the education and health of children and families, through accessing the outdoors. We put a huge emphasis on families discovering places and simply having fun together in the fresh air.
We think being in the outdoors can always be an adventure, if you’re in your back garden or up a Munro! We want children to grow up feeling connected to their natural environment and to instil a life-long love of exercise, learning and adventure.
We want parents and carers to feel supported in enabling their kids to use the outdoors, whether they are babies in a pram, kids on bikes or in a wheelchair, reluctant walkers or intrepid teenagers. We also know the importance of exercise and fresh air for the physical and mental wellbeing of parents and carers.
Wee Adventure is based around Inverness but we explore out to all areas of the Highlands and Moray.
Let’s Go On a Wee Adventure, Inverness was our first project (2017). We have sold or distributed over 3000 copies since June 2017. This includes through NHS community health teams, community groups and the not-for-profit sector to reach families who may not otherwise be able to access a copy.
Wheel Adventure is our second big project (2021), to create a second publication full of new routes and to give it a wheels focus. We have tried to create a publication that can grow up with the kids and involve the whole family – cycle, wheel, push, scoot, walk and roll together!
All profits from any sales will go back into the charity to fund future projects in the community that meet our purpose.
We have held a number of family events to invite people to try some active outdoor fun at Abriachan Forest Trust, Aigas Field Centre and Brahan Estate. We hope to hold more.
Wee Adventure was founded by Abby Lucas, Pauline Irish and Lesley Hansen in August 2016. In 2020, we were joined by Catherine Pearks to begin work with us on the Wheel Adventure project. We are all volunteers, excited to put our collective skills to use for this charity. Scottish charity number SC046810.
